Match fixing is a growing threat to the integrity of sport, facilitated by new online in-play betting markets sufficiently liquid to allow substantial profits to be made from manipulating an event. It can be linked to developments in the betting environment and is a potential threat to the football industry to the extent that it may deter fans, sponsors, and broadcasters from purchasing the product. The American Football betting market provides a particularly attractive domain to study the nexus between public sentiment and the wisdom of crowds. Finally, the offence in question has repercussions on business activities performed in conjunction with sports events and with other kinds of events offering the possibility to make bets. Consequently, in the Republic of Moldova, the manipulation of sports and betting events is classified as a specific criminal offence.
